Love those Labels IV (Fresh Sound New Talent CD reviews)
From 34-year-old saxophonist Jason Rigby comes The Sage, a disc which trusts its listeners to put faith in deep explorations of tense and edgy material. With trumpeter Russ Johnson, electric pianist Mike Holober, bassist Cameron Brown and drummer Gerald Cleaver, Rigby's going for a less lyrical, more moody esthetic. Although there's a lot of contemporary grooving -- and also plenty rumbling, ominous, rubato work -- the disc also brings to mind for me early Weather Report. However The Sage is less earthy, and Holober's keyboard work strikes me as more mathematical and pattern-based, while Joe Zawinul's lines sounded more natural to me.
